You should apply for building control approval before you start any building works. As a householder, you can choose to submit using full plans or via a building notice:
- Full plans requires you to submit a full set of drawings and associated structural calculations for the entirety of the proposed work. The drawings and calculations are checked by the local authority building control and then approved. Approval may take about 5 weeks.
- A building notice is a quicker route although it does not allow for issues to identified by Building Control prior to work starting. There is no requirement to submit drawings or calculations with the building notice but the Building Inspector may still ask for them.
