If I replace 2 internal load-bearing walls with steel beams, will my house be safe?

The replacement of internal load-bearing walls requires the involvement of a structural engineer.

The engineer will not just calculate the vertical load that the steel beams are required to carry. They will review the entire structure as well as assess the adequacy of the remaining walls and foundations to carry the new loading configuration.

The removal of a brick wall can have a negative impact on the lateral restraint capability of the total structure. If the wall removed was, in effect, a buttressing wall, additional work may be required to one or more remaining walls in order to maintain lateral stability. The engineer will provide calculations and a written report with recommendations upon conclusion of the structural investigation.
