Yes, steel columns can be designed to support the beam ends. With this option the posts may need to sit on a slightly bigger foundation than is there. The reason being that when the beam sits on the masonry, the load has spread through the wall by the time it reaches the foundations. With a steel post you have a concentrated load on the foundations, which sometimes can mean costly foundation works. A variation on this would be to design a “picture frame” steelwork frame.
Most designs are achievable, some cost a lot more than others. Your structural engineer will always attempt to provide a safe and cost-effective solution.
